Sakpatá (for Percussion Ensemble and Electronic Tape)

Sakpatá is based on chants and rhythms from the Afro-Cuban religions Santería and Arará. It features chants for the Yoruba deity of mountains Obatalá and the Arará god of the Earth Sakpatá. This work is through-composed and fully notated. It is accompanied by an electronic soundtrack featuring lead vocals and some electronic sonorities. Sakpatá is brimming with rhythmic melodies for xylophone and marimbas, while a full battery of tom-toms, congas, and other percussion instruments grooves on in colorful interactions with the recorded material.
