This piece synthesizes the Cuban contradanza, which was emblematic of Cuban culture in the 19th century, son montuno, a popular Cuban dance style that has influenced modern salsa music, and classical fugal compositional technique. It is orchestrated for three marimbas, timbales, and güiro, and it is ideal for percussion ensemble concerts that wish to incorporate Latin-American groove elements with through-composed percussion concert music.
